RGI interactive graphic recording

The Renewables Grid Initiative asked me to cover their workshop about exploring where green energy infrastructure can be deployed in Europe and worldwide. They wanted to do something interactive that would energise the participants and also create a community feeling, so we decided to add an interactive element to graphic recording.

We started with a foundational illustration

Based on the topics of the event, we co-created an illustration that served as the basis of the graphic recording, detailing the different space possibilities for infrastructure, such as the sea, cities, agricultural areas, nature, etc. Then, during the event, we asked the participants to share their perspective about what they heard during the panel discussions, and put their post-its to where it seems relevant on the illustration.

Most of the interaction happened during the breaks

In the morning people were very focused on listening to the speakers so there was very little interaction, but during the linch break, people started to come up to me and share their ideas about what should be on the drawing. For me it was a great way to learn what other aspects are there around energy and space and I incorporated all of it in the drawing. The result was a visual that was so much richer and more meaningful than if I had just done it all by myself.

Interactive graphic recording boost connections among participants

“Crowdsourcing” graphic recording like this at workshops is a form of using collective intelligence and based on the feedback, it was very much worth the effort. So if you have an upcoming workshop or event where you would like to have some interaction with the participants and create connections, feel free to reach out.
